Once again the daily news cycle is filled with abuses by ACORN. Adding insult to injury is the fact that the illegal actions that ACORN engaged in were funded by the hard working, tax paying citizens of this country.
On February 6th of the this year The Senate voted on the Vitter Amenedment (S. Admt. 107) to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (H.R. 1). This amendment, presented by Senator David Vitter (R-Louisiana) was for the purpose of “Prohibiting direct or indirect use of funds to fund the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN).” In short, it would not allow ACORN to receive any of the stimulus funds. This amendment would have provided a positive step towards ending the funneling of our hard earned money to the nuts at ACORN. To their credit, every Republican that cast a vote ( Hutchison – TX and Gregg – NH did not vote) Voted for the amendment. To their shame, every Democrat that voted ( Kennedy – MA did not vote) save a brave remnant of six (Baucus – MT, Bayh – IN, Byrd – WV, Hagan – NC, Nelson – NE, Tester – MT) voted in opposition to the amendment sending it spiraling in defeat.
Among the nay sayers were Senators Pryor and Lincoln, who represent me as well as the other good people of Arkansas. I decided to give Senator Lincoln a call and ask exactly how she justified opposing Senator Vitter’s amendment. I was informed by her aid that the Senator opposed the amendment because there were “a lot of good things” that would have been eliminated should the amendment have been accepted.
I thought about this defense, and it dawned on me this is how ACORN is able to survive. By arm twisting and intimidating weak politicians to participate in pork barrel politics. These spineless politicians put little snipets in the bills that they can spew to their constituents all the while sneaking in provisions for funding radical special interest groups. Electing courageous men and women to lead this nation that are not afraid to oppose these pig infested bills is the only way we will ever begin to see an end to wasteful spending. Call your elected officials and tell them you expect them to oppose any legislation that includes funding to groups such as ACORN. A little leaven leavens the whole lump.
